Senior Hands-on Platform Engineer (Observability)
We are looking for a Senior Hands-on Platform Engineer with strong expertise in Observability to join Team Beacons and help build, operate, and evolve the next-generation Observability Platform.
The team is responsible for both engineering the observability stack and driving observability standards, practices, and adoption across the organization. The platform will support workloads running in both the existing developer environment and the new Drive developer platform.
This is a highly hands-on role where you will be involved throughout the lifecycle — from design and implementation to production operations, troubleshooting, documentation, and developer enablement.
We are looking for someone who combines strong technical skills with excellent communication and collaboration abilities. You should enjoy working directly with developers, understanding their challenges, and turning those insights into simple, scalable, and reliable observability solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Drive the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the company's observability platform.
Design and operate a scalable, reliable, and easy-to-use observability stack supporting multiple development environments.
Work closely with developers and platform teams to understand their day-to-day observability challenges and requirements.
Act as an Observability advocate, promoting best practices, standards, and effective observability patterns across the organization.
Define and document paved paths, guidelines, and best practices to make observability easy for development teams to adopt.
Gather feedback from users and developer communities and translate it into new platform capabilities.
Work extensively with the OpenTelemetry ecosystem and stay up to date with its continuous evolution.
Build, maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize the observability platform with a strong focus on usability, scalability, performance, and operational efficiency.
Take ownership of production operations, including monitoring, incident handling, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement.
Participate in a 24/7 rotating on-call / ISL support schedule for the observability platform.
Collaborate with engineering, platform, and development teams to establish consistent observability standards.
Contribute hands-on to implementation and automation rather than focusing solely on architecture or coordination.
Required Qualifications
Several years of experience working as a Platform Engineer, DevOps Engineer, SRE, or similar role.
Strong hands-on experience with Observability platforms and practices.
Practical experience with OpenTelemetry.
Hands-on experience with the LGTM stack, including:
Loki – Logs
Grafana – Visualization & dashboards
Tempo – Distributed tracing
Mimir – Metrics
Experience designing, implementing, and operating platforms in production environments.
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to investigate complex technical issues.
Familiarity with AWS and cloud-based infrastructure.
Experience with or knowledge of AWS CloudFormation is an advantage.
Strong understanding of modern cloud-native and platform engineering practices.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Ability and willingness to work directly with developers and act as a developer advocate for observability.
Strong documentation skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly.
A learning-by-doing mindset and the ability to quickly adopt new technologies.
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills
Experience with Kubernetes and cloud-native environments.
Experience building internal developer platforms or platform-as-a-product capabilities.
Knowledge of metrics, logs, traces, distributed systems, and telemetry pipelines.
Experience with observability standards and practices such as OpenTelemetry semantic conventions.
Experience with infrastructure-as-code and automation.
Experience supporting high-availability production platforms.
Experience working in an on-call / incident-management environment.
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for someone who is hands-on, proactive, curious, and comfortable with ambiguity.
The observability platform is under active development and has important delivery milestones. You should therefore be comfortable moving quickly, learning new technologies, making pragmatic decisions, and taking action without waiting for everything to be perfectly defined.
You should also enjoy working with people. This role requires someone who can switch between building the platform, operating it in production, helping developers, gathering feedback, and advocating for better observability practices.
Key Traits
Hands-on and technically strong
Customer / developer focused
Strong communicator and collaborator
Proactive problem solver
Comfortable with ambiguity and change
Fast learner
Strong ownership mindset
Passionate about observability and developer experience
